Health Foods that make me go "Ewww..."

9/16/2014

Linking up with the lovely Heather's Friday Favorites this week over at Housewife Glamour.  With a post about some of my not-so-favorite foods...:)

IF you've been reading Enticing Healthy Eating for a while now, I'm sure you can figure out that I do support a healthy diet and lifestyle.  I enjoy cooking up healthy recipes and eating for both fuel and pleasure.

That doesn't meant I eat healthy ALL the time.  Just as I can crave a giant, hearty salad with lots of veggies or a bowl of fruit bigger than the size of my head, I also crave a giant cheesy slice of pizza or a big bowl of cookie dough ice cream.  Just because I'm a self-proclaimed health nut doesn't mean I will turn down an offer for going out for a Dairy Queen blizzard.

With that being said, as much as I do actually enjoy eating a "mostly" healthy diet, there's some health foods out there that I just cant' get on board with.  Let's dive into the health foods that make me go "ewww...."

Quinoa

I wish I liked quinoa.  I really REALLY do. Especially because I know it's a superfood powerhouse of nutrients!  But it's the texture....I just...I can't.

Protein Bars

First of all, I'm talking about packaged protein bars you buy.  Not homemade protein bars.  I have tried my fair share of protein bars out there and have yet to find one that tastes great.  I challenge you, companies that make and sell protein bars to send me a protein bar I actually enjoy!

Where's the fun, protein bars?!  Where's the fun?

La Croix

Tastes like a weak soda, in my opinion.  No thank you.

Cantaloupe or Honeydew

I don't even know what it is about cantaloupe or honeydew, but my taste buds just say "no!"  Even as a child, I was never a big fan.  Now, watermelon, on the other hand, I'm ALL over.  I could eat an entire watermelon by myself.  I'll pass on the other melons.

But I never get tired of that food pun...

Basil

As much as I would like to enjoy those pretty little basil leaves I frequently see decorating a fresh pizza or caprese salad...No.

Almonds

It's not that I CAN'T eat almonds, I just prefer not to.  They do not get my taste buds at all excited.  Oh, and another thing?  I don't really enjoy nuts IN other dishes--especially baked goods.  I do not enjoy chomping through boulders of nut pieces in my cookies, cupcakes, or pies.  Yes, I'm getting a bit picky, but nuts are a prime "healthy" food so I thought they should be included in my list of food dislikes.

Cilantro

I know it's not necessarily a "health" food, but I must add this one in because it is by far my least favorite ingredient of all time.  I. Cannot. Stand. Cilantro.  Turns out there's evidence that suggests it's actually due to a genetic variation that us cilantro haters can't stand this herb.  Plus, Julia Child didn't like it either.  So, I feel like I've got a support group out there.

On a side note:  I do NOT appreciate the fact that Chipotle restaurants put cilantro in ALL of their salsas and guacamole.  And I love Chipotle food!  Why do you do this to me, Chipotle, why?!

Do you have any food aversions you just can't get over?

Are there any foods/drinks you wished you enjoyed?

I'm totally with you on some of these things! I dislike La Croix too, it's not good at all. I can't stand any nuts in baked goods either, I feel like they ruin the dish even though I'll eat them raw haha.

And yes to cilantro being so gross.. it tastes like soap!

Woohoo! Sounds like we have commonalities in tastes, Danielle! It is so nice to meet another non-nut lover in baked goods. Makes me feel not so alone. :) And the cilantro...YES! Tastes just like soap and/or metal to me as well.

The thing about cilantro is so interesting... I like cilantro, but I don't have an aversion to many things. Refined sugar and processed foods, maybe haha.

Glad you learned a little more about cilantro. Well that is a great thing that you're not picky and have many food aversions though! I'm willing to try anything, that's for sure. There are just some foods (the ones listed above) I have found just don't agree with me. I'm with ya on the refined sugar and processed foods as well. I limit those to special treats. :)

It's such a funny thing to talk about because as healthy living bloggers it's like we'rd "supposed" to like certain things. I haaate quinoa too. However, I'm a hugggge almond, honeydew, cilantro and basil fan. But don't even get me started on beets. Nastiest food in the WORLD haha

Kaylin

Agreed, Lauren. We don't have to like everything, we're human too--even as "healthy living" bloggers! Finally, another person who dislikes quinoa! Haha. The only way I have yet to have beets and enjoy them was in a healthy green juice drink. But I could hardly taste them. :)

I literally LOLED so hard at
"I do not enjoy chomping through boulders of nut pieces in my cookies, cupcakes, or pies. "
and I couldn't agree more, they get in the way
You know what I hate FENNEL with a passion, YUCK, and anything spicy...
but i love LOVE quinoa!

Kaylin

Glad I could make you laugh, Amber! They are seriously like boulders, in my opinion...You know, fennel is a tough one for me too. I have had it in ways I've enjoyed...and other ways I haven't enjoyed. So I feel ya!

The La Croix. That's about the only thing on your list I can't get on board with. Quinoa? Love it. Cilantro? Adore it. Basil? I had caprese salad every chance I got this summer when heirloom tomatoes were available.
However, we should talk about kale chips.

Nice to know some other non-fans of La Croix out there! Everyone I had talked to before just loves the stuff. Haha, now kale chips I actually do love! Best way to have kale, in my opinion.

I am soooo with you on the quinoa and the La Croix. My freshman roommate in college was OBSESSED with La Croix, so it there were always cans of it everywhere, which I think probably just fueled my dislike of it, hah.

Kaylin

Woohoo! Another one who understands my quinoa dislike! That's a pretty darn good reason to not enjoy La Croix though...:)

I'm totally with you on the cantaloupe and honeydew. Most protein bars taste nasty too. I do like Cilantro. :)

They really need to work on making tastier protein bars, yes?

The only thing I can agree with you on this is protein bars. OMG. They are horrible. I've tried many varieties but have never found anything I like. I always spit out the first bite and then throw the bar away. I'd probably agree with you on La Croix as well but I've never tried it so I can't say for sure. But I'd probably hate it. I'd rather just drink plane ole water. :)

Tell me about it! I'm glad somebody else out there thinks they need to up their game in the protein bar industries for taste and flavor. Thanks for stopping by, Julie!

Interesting to find out about cilantro! I happen to love it but a lot of my friends don't. Ha, that cantaloupe picture is great. I like that and honeydew, but it has to be squishy and juicy. When it's hard it really grosses me out! This was a fun post to read. Thanks so much for linking up and hope you're enjoying the weekend! :)

Glad you learned something about cilantro and had some laughs with the melon pictures. Thanks so much, Heather!

Some of these make me think you're a little crazy, but some of my best friends are a little crazy, so... :)

I personally can't do creamed corn. NAS.TY. :P

I have been called crazy and quirky before, Laurie, so I am definitely okay with that! We're all a little different. :) And I happen love creamed corn!
